Personality:

Positive Traits

Steadfast: Hermann shows an unrelenting loyalty towards the people he works alongside with. One example of this is Hermann’s relationship with his father, Lars Gottlieb. Lars had been one of the head engineers of the Anti-Kaiju Wall Project (basically an enormous wall surrounding the Pacific Rim area) and Hermann had been working on the early stages of the Jaeger program with the PPDC. And Hermann believed the Jaeger program was humanity’s last chance to fight back. Long story short, Hermann declined to work on the Anti-Kaiju Wall, putting even more strain on their already tense relationship.

Another example of Hermann’s chivalrous loyalty is his interactions with Newton. Despite the two’s relationship being a tenuous one, Hermann shows both deep respect and affection towards him. During the events of Uprising, Hermann’s devotion to him is unwavering. The two haven’t spoken to each other in ten years and Newton (now taken over by the Precursors) acts terse and dismissive towards him. Yet Hermann maintains his commitment to keeping their relationship afloat. If that means dragging his friend down to his lab so that they can look at his (absolutely maddening) kaiju-blood-rocket-fuel project, then so be it.

Calculative: Hermann can maintain a level head in not-so-great situations. He doesn’t allow his emotions to swallow him whole. This helps him make laser-sharp decisions during tense operations. For example, when the PPDC had been hit with the news that three Category 5 Kaiju have invaded Earth and will probably cause a cataclysmic event – they turned to Hermann to equip their remaining Jaegers with the MetalAF-Kaiju-Blood-Rocket-Fuel within the next 48 hours. But his experiment had just been that: An experiment. It was in the early stages of testing and there were no guarantees that it will work. Instead of telling LOCCENT that it’s an impossible task, he looked at those chumps straight in the eyes and said, “Let’s do this shit.”

(Not a direct quote, but you get the idea.)

Fastidious: Hermann is a numbers man. As a young child, he showed a great aptitude for abstract mathematics. A subject that typically requires one to pay close attention to even the smallest of details. And no matter how abstract a problem/equation may be, numbers give Hermann a framework to work around. He once told Marshal Pentecost that “numbers don’t lie”. And he continues to maintain that philosophy 10 years after the fact. Even when he is getting his hands dirty in Kaiju entrails and building rockets.

Negative Traits

Stubborn: The events of the first film illustrate Hermann to be an unpleasant fellow to work around. For starters, he was very particular about tidiness. He wasn’t the biggest fan of Newton’s antics of throwing shit all over the place. That eventually leads to the two splitting the lab down in half using yellow caution tape. But the best illustration of this is with their fight over whether to make a neural handshake with a Kaiju brain. Herman dismisses Newton’s theory because, in theory, it could hurt someone.

Fast-forward to Newton building a drift machine out of garbage and is splayed on the floor after drifting with a Kaiju. It’s at that point that Hermann learns to not let his rigid behaviour cloud his judgment and to work with Newton.

In Uprising, Hermann maintains a messier lab space but maintains that same headstrong energy. This time, however, he is working in a manner similar to Newton with his work on utilising Kaiju blood as propulsion fuel. Precursor!Newton even scolds Hermann for being silly enough to work on such a thing. That he risks hurting himself. But taking what Hermann has learned from the Kaiju War, he wants him and Newton to work together again. That they can overcome the experiment’s shortcomings if they simply work as a team together, just like old times.

Scatter-Brained: After Hermann’s drift with Newton, he has picked up on a few residual traits you’d see with the Kaiju Groupie. One of those traits is having a much messier workspace than normal. You might find research material buried deep in a pile of dishevelled manilla folders and half-eaten sandwiches. His meticulous filing system is thrown out of the window and replaced with organized chaos. You’ll need a magnifying and a prayer if you hope to make sense of Hermann’s new way of work.

Interpersonal Skills: Hermann can be an awkward fellow. When he was growing up, he was bullied a lot in school and had few opportunities to socialize. And because of that, he isn’t the best at making normal conversations with others. He is the type of person who takes a while to warm up to others. If someone is meeting him for the first time, then he will probably stick to small talk and remain quiet for the rest of the time. Not to say that Hermann is incapable of making friends. But it might take a while if someone wants him to open up more.

Powers/Abilities:

Hermann doesn’t have any powers or supernatural abilities. I’ll highlight his specific skillset in the Sustainability section of this app.

I will note that he looks hella cute in woolly socks and I think that deserves to be a special ability in its own right.

Regret:

Being powerless to stop the Precursors for good.

Suitability:

If you were to evaluate Hermann for his skill set, then he’s got a few things to contribute. First, he has a keen genius intellect for abstract mathematics. During the Kaiju War, as one of the two remaining scientists of the K-Science Division, Hermann calculated the Double Event. The Double Event is when two Kaiju emerge from the Breach at once. His contribution gave the PPDC the framework for Operation Pitfall, where they would deploy Jaegers to deposit a nuclear bomb into the Breach’s ‘throat’, destroying the Anteverse home base.

After the war, Hermann began his work on an efficient propulsion fuel for future Jaeger models. His theory? That Kaiju blood can be used as a much beefier version of rocket fuel, propelling Jaegers from Moyulan to Mt Fuji in half the time. #MetalAF

He is also a very skilled computer programmer. He was one of the first scientists to put together the initial operating system for the Jaeger program. And when the PPDC had been sent encrypted data after the attack in Australia, Hermann determined they were coordinates to an abandoned Jaeger production facility in Siberia.

From an interpersonal standpoint? If there is anything Hermann has learned while working with the PPDC, it is that it takes a team effort in order to overcome your greatest enemies. While he wants nothing more than to erase his regret, he knows that an orb-acquiring expedition requires that he pull his weight to support the crew.

Overall, his regret will be the driving factor for him to complete his contract. Now that he has realized that Newton has been possessed by the Precursors, it adds that much pressure to not kneel to apathy. Because not only is his best friend in danger, but Earth is now at the risk of yet another apocalyptic scenario. Even if he were the only crewmember left on the station, he will proudly march into the Transporter Room regardless of the risk.
